The tasks and roles of social workers: a focused overview of research evidence

    Get PDF
Options for Excellence is a joint DfES and DH-funded review of the social care workforce. Four task groups have been set up, each dealing with different aspects of social care. Task Group 3 is considering the roles and tasks of social workers. In order to inform the work of this group, the Thomas Coram Research Unit was asked to provide an overview of relevant research and data in three main areas: the effective deployment of social worker time and tasks, improving cross-professional working, and attitudes to take-up of post-qualifying qualifications

    Prosthesis coupling

    Get PDF
A coupling for use in an apparatus for connecting a prosthesis to the bone of a stump of an amputated limb is described which permits a bio-compatible carbon sleeve forming a part of the prosthesis connector to float so as to prevent disturbing the skin seal around the carbon sleeve. The coupling includes a flexible member interposed between a socket that is inserted within an intermedullary cavity of the bone and the sleeve. A lock pin is carried by the prosthesis and has a stem portion which is adapted to be coaxially disposed and slideably within the tubular female socket for securing the prosthesis to the stump. The skin around the percutaneous carbon sleeve is able to move as a result of the flexing coupling so as to reduce stresses caused by changes in the stump shape and/or movement between the bone and the flesh portion of the stump

HgSe, a highly electronegative stable metallic contact for semiconductor devices

    Get PDF
Schottky barriers formed by the highly electronegative substance HgSe on n-ZnS and on n-ZnSe have been characterized by capacitance-voltage and photoresponse measurements. The barriers are about 0.5 eV greater than Au barriers on these n-type substrates. HgSe contacts are stable under ambient conditions and are easily fabricated, making them attractive for device use

Highly electronegative metallic contacts to semiconductors using polymeric sulfur nitride

The Schottky barriers formed on nā€ZnS and nā€ZnSe by polymeric sulfur nitride have been compared to barriers formed by Au. Barrier energies as determined by photoresponse, currentā€voltage, and capacitanceā€voltage methods show that (SN)_x is approximately 1.0 eV higher than Au on nā€ZnS and 0.3ā€“0.4 eV higher than Au on nā€ZnSe. We believe that this is the first report of any metallic contact more electronegative than Au

    William H. Crawford: 1772ā€“1834

    Get PDF
Senator from Georgia, minister to France, cabinet officer, and unsuccessful presidential candidate, William Harris Crawford was one of the major figures of the early republic. Because most of his papers were destroyed by fire during the Civil War period, however, estimates of Crawfordā€™s abilities and accomplishments have usually been based on the papers of his political adversariesā€”notably John Quincy Adamsā€”and few men of his stature have received so little attention from historians. This first full biographical study, drawing on hundreds of documentary collections, many never used in biographies and monographs of the period, throws new light on Crawfordā€™s career and his relationships with his contemporaries. The late Chase C. Mooney was professor of history at Indiana University.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_united_states_history/1071/thumbnail.jp

California Sea Urchin Commission v. Bean

    Get PDF
In California Sea Urchin Commission v. Bean, the Ninth Circuit upheld the Fish and Wildlife Serviceā€™s decision to end an experimental sea otter colony and translocation program. Commercial fishing groups sought reversal of the decision due to their interest in maintaining the translocation program which reduced otter predation on commercially valuable shellfish. While the Ninth Circuit held the group had standing, it then applied the Chevron test and determined the agencyā€™s actions were reasonable
